At TEDxYouthCroydon’s second annual event we had some of the most talented and inspiring young people of today. Through his own personal journey, Dwayne coached our audience on how to be an ‘engi-preneur’, mixing engineering analysis and an entrepreneurial approach to design your own life. Below is his TEDx experience and words of wisdom for future speakers…
Tell us about your experience…
“I applied to speak at TEDxYouth@Croydon 2014 because I am passionate about changing the way people think. The topic I chose ‘Being an Engi-preneur’ is really a reflection of who I am, and my journey so far.
Crafting my speech was difficult at first but with the knowledge and teachings of the coaches it become easier to digest. Coaching was awesome. I learnt my speech through breaking it down into smaller parts and then repeating it until it stuck in my head, but honestly if I could do anything differently I would have studied my speech more.
Delivering my speech on the day was completely nerve wracking but stimulating.
I had a few glitches during my speech but afterwards I was happy, the feedback has been overwhelming and very humbling. My favourite part of the experience was the reaction from audience after my speech, I could really tell they had enjoyed the speech.
The biggest thing I learnt from my TEDx Croydon experience was to never underestimate the task at hand, no matter how big or small.”
Any advice for future speakers?
“To create an engaging speech talk about things that anyone can relate to, and practice really does make perfect!”
